How to use this bill splitter
Split evenly
- Choose your currency.
- Enter the bill subtotal, meaning the amount before tax and tip.
- Enter the tax rate if it is not already in the subtotal, and the tip percentage you want to leave.
- Enter the number of people. Each person's share appears straight away.
Split by item
- Switch to Split by item and type each person's name.
- Add every item from the receipt with its price, then tick the people who shared it. A shared item is divided equally between the people ticked.
- Read each person's total. Tax and tip are added in proportion to what each person ordered.
- Use Copy results to paste the breakdown into a chat, or Copy link to this calculation to share the calculation itself.
How the split is calculated
This calculator uses plain arithmetic that you can check by hand:
- Tax = subtotal × tax % ÷ 100
- Tip = tip base × tip % ÷ 100, where the tip base is either the subtotal or the subtotal plus tax, depending on your choice
- Total = subtotal + tax + tip
- Even split: each share = total ÷ number of people
- Split by item: each person's share of the tax and tip = their items ÷ all items × the tax or tip
If you choose to round each share up, every share is raised to the next whole unit of your currency, so the group may pay slightly more than the exact total. The results show that difference. The currency setting only changes how amounts are formatted, and no conversion between currencies is done.
Worked examples
Even split. A bill subtotal of 120 with no tax, an 18% tip and 4 people: the tip is 21.60, the total is 141.60, and each person pays 35.40.
Split by item. Amy has pasta (20), Ben has a steak (40), Amy and Ben share a starter (12), and Cara has a dessert (8). The subtotal is 80. With 10% tax (8.00) and a 15% tip on the subtotal (12.00), the total is 100.00. Amy's items come to 26 (20 plus half the starter), so she pays 26 + 2.60 tax + 3.90 tip = 32.50. Ben's items come to 46, so he pays 57.50, and Cara pays 10.00.
Should you split evenly or by item?
An even split is quick and works well when everyone ordered similar amounts, or when the group shares most dishes. It is also the friendliest choice for a casual meal where nobody wants to track receipts.
Splitting by item is fairer when spending differs a lot, for example when one person had a starter and a drink and another only had water. It takes a minute longer, but nobody pays for something they did not order. If a group agrees on the method before ordering, there is less awkwardness when the check arrives.
Should you tip before or after tax?
Customs differ by country and by person. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal because tax is not part of the service, while others tip on the full total for simplicity. This calculator lets you choose.
The difference is small but real. With a subtotal of 100, 10% tax and a 15% tip, tipping on the subtotal gives a tip of 15.00 and a total of 125.00. Tipping on the total after tax gives a tip of 16.50 and a total of 126.50. Also check your receipt first, because some restaurants add a service charge automatically.
Trips, roommates and larger groups
The same tool works for a group dinner, a work lunch, a shared taxi, or a delivery order split between colleagues. Add each person, list the items, and share the result with the group. This tool splits a single bill. It does not keep a running record of who has paid whom over several days, so for a long trip you may want to total your shared costs first and enter them as one bill.

Each person pays a share of the tax equal to their share of the subtotal. Someone who ordered 10% of the food pays 10% of the tax and 10% of the tip.
Does the calculator work in my currency?
Yes. Choose a currency from the list to format the amounts correctly, including PKR, INR, AED, GBP and EUR. The tool does not convert between currencies, so enter your bill in the currency you select.
